Insta360 cameras have become popular among vloggers and content creators for reasons that are genuinely compelling: the ability to shoot everything at once, reframe in post, and capture perspectives that no conventional camera can replicate. But 360° footage is not a universal solution, and using it indiscriminately creates as many problems as it solves.

360° vs standard shooting: what actually changes

Standard cameras capture a fixed frame: you point the lens, you get what is in front of it. 360° cameras capture a spherical view of everything around the device simultaneously. In post-production (or via auto-reframing tools), you choose which portion of that sphere becomes your final frame.

The practical implications are significant. With a 360° camera on a selfie stick, the stick disappears from the captured sphere — which means you get clean handheld footage without visible stabilisation equipment. You can shoot yourself from a third-person perspective without a dedicated camera operator. You can capture an environment fully and decide the angle later.

The tradeoff is image quality. Splitting a sensor across a full sphere means each portion of the frame receives less resolution and less light than a standard camera pointed in one direction. This becomes visible in low-light environments, and it creates soft edges when the footage is reframed and upscaled.

Limitations for talking-head content

At conversational distance — 60 to 90cm — the reframed image from a 360° capture will show visible softness compared to a dedicated standard camera. The auto-reframing algorithms improve this considerably, but there is a fundamental physics limitation: you cannot get the same optical quality from a fraction of a spherical sensor that you get from a full sensor pointed directly at the subject.
